This month we celebrated a return to in-person events! While remaining cautious in terms of mask usage and being mindful of capacity limits, several of our July book clubs moved into a hybrid format for the first time, offering participants the option to join us here in the shop or from the comfort of their homes via Zoom.

July events picked up mid-month with our much-beloved Bad Romance Book Club discussing Cat Sebastian’s newest historical release, The Queer Principles of Kit Webb. While summer time travels led to a bit of a smaller gathering, the conversation was flowing and spirited, as usual. Keep the historical love coming with a discussion of Diana Quincy’s Her Night with the Duke and The Viscount Made Me Do It (a new release!) on Friday, August 20th.

July Book Club News Round-Up:

  • The True Story! Book Club had the honor of being our first official hybrid book club, christening our flex event space with a discussion of Daisy Hernandez’s The Kissing Bug. They’ll return on August 15th to chat about the buzzworthy Empire of Pain by Patrick Radden Keefe, which has already proved to be an infuriating and fascinating staff pick.

  • Our mystery lovers, the Murder by the Book Club, discussed Camille Sten’s chilling novel The Lost Village and will be returning to non-fiction in August with The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream.

  • Our Sci-fi/Fantasy club dissected The Master of Djinn by P. Djèlí Clark and will be diving into a queer-friendly YA selection this month with Gearbreakers by Zoe Hana Mikuta.

  • The steadfast Old Town Books Book(s) Club met in the hybrid format to share their thoughts about Rivka Galchen’s Everyone Knows Your Mother is a Witch. Come unlock the mysteries of Katie Kitamura’s Intimacies with us on August 22nd!

In addition to our monthly clubs, Old Town Books returned to in-person community building in a big way on Saturday, July 17th. Our Prompts in the Park event welcomed a large group of writers and book lovers to meet with some of the DMV’s independent publishers. It was a wonderful morning full of creativity, conversation, and book friends old and new. Be sure to sign up for our email list for all of the latest news and event updates!
